A Visit to a Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Academy

Our visit to a Chinese calligraphy and painting academy was a memorable encounter with the richness of traditional Chinese art, literature and philosophy. Surrounded by magnificent landscape paintings, elegant calligraphy, carefully carved sculptures and displays of cultural artefacts, we were welcomed into a world where artistic expression carries the wisdom of history and the spirit of life. The walls were adorned with Chinese ink paintings depicting majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, winding rivers, mist covered valleys, ancient bridges and traditional mountain villages. Some works glowed with the warm colours of sunrise, while others evoked the quiet beauty of landscapes hidden beneath drifting clouds. Through delicate brushwork, layered ink washes and thoughtful composition, the artists transformed nature into a poetic vision of harmony between humanity and the natural world.

During our conversation with the artist, we learned how traditional Chinese landscape painting draws inspiration from classical philosophy, including the I Ching, or Book of Changes. The placement of mountains, flowing water, waterfalls and the rising sun is not merely decorative. These elements can carry auspicious meanings, expressing abundance, vitality, prosperity and hope for the future. Water gathers in pools, mountains rise towards the heavens, and the morning sun illuminates the landscape, suggesting renewal and the continuous movement of life. One particularly striking feature of the visit was the close relationship between painting and poetry. In Chinese artistic tradition, the brush is not simply a tool for creating images or writing characters. It is an instrument for expressing personal experience, reflection and emotion. A landscape can become a poem without words, while a poem can open a new way of seeing a painting. Calligraphy, painting and poetry come together as complementary forms of artistic expression.

The artist also shared reflections on his own life experiences, including his years spent in the countryside. Those formative experiences taught him to understand ordinary people, appreciate the realities of daily life and value the principle of seeking truth from facts. These lessons became part of his artistic understanding, influencing how he observes the world and translates personal memories into creative work. We also heard about his international academic and cultural exchanges. He spoke of travelling to Thailand with a fellow artist after they were invited to serve as visiting professors at a Thai royal university. Following their return, a poem was composed to commemorate the experience, reflecting the friendship, artistic exchange and mutual respect that grow when people from different cultures meet through literature and the arts.

Beyond the paintings and calligraphy, the academy’s interior revealed another dimension of Chinese cultural heritage. Traditional wooden shelving displayed decorative objects, artistic treasures and symbolic ornaments, while a finely carved wooden sculpture demonstrated the patience and craftsmanship involved in traditional sculpture. Each object contributed to an atmosphere of contemplation, where art was not separated from everyday life but formed part of a broader cultural environment. For us, this visit was more than an opportunity to admire beautiful works of art. It was a chance to listen, learn and understand how an artist’s personal history, cultural inheritance and philosophical reflections can converge in a distinctive artistic style. The experience also reminded us that cultural exchange is most meaningful when it involves genuine conversation and a willingness to appreciate different traditions.

As we left the academy, the images of misty mountains, flowing waterfalls and golden morning light remained in our minds. They seemed to carry a quiet message: art gives form to memory, poetry gives voice to experience, and cultural friendship allows these expressions to travel beyond borders. Our visit offered a welcome moment of stillness. Through the language of brush and ink, we were reminded that the beauty of art lies not only in what we see, but also in the thoughts, experiences and human connections that it inspires.
